new cornell museum offers wide array of summer exhibits

WINTER PARK, Fla. ― Rollins College’s Cornell Fine Arts Museum, which re-opened to the public in January after a two-year expansion and renovation project, is offering three summer exhibitions that reflect the Museum’s rich and extensive permanent collection.  From Renaissance masters to cutting-edge contemporary artists, the Cornell’s shows feature a variety of fine objects drawn from its distinguished collection, the oldest in Florida.

Selected from the Cornell’s collection of graphics, Four Decades of Contemporary Prints, on view through August 27, includes the Museum’s most recent acquisition ― Ed Ruscha’s suite of six Country Cityscapes.  Also included are silkscreens, etchings, and lithographs by Jim Dine, Lorna Simpson, David Hockney, Christo, John Buck, Nancy Graves, and Pat Steir, among many other well-known contemporary artists.

Director’s Choice: European Art, 1345 to 1901, on view this summer through August 13th, and offers a glimpse of the Cornell’s noted European art collection, ranging from the Italian Renaissance in the 1400s to French Realism in the late 1800s.  Director’s Choice includes The Visitation between Mary and Elizabeth, by Francesco de Mura c.1750, Portrait of the Countess Beaufort, by Louis-Michel van Loo c.1760, and Innocence, by William-Adolphe Bouguereau, 1901.

Another show drawn from the Cornell’s collection is Winslow Homer Illustrating War, on view through August 6.  This show is comprised of Winslow Homer’s wood engravings illustrating the Civil War.  Homer (1836-1910), an artist-correspondent for Harper’s Weekly, drew some of the most poignant images of the War.

The Cornell Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.  Admission is free for Cornell Museum members, for Rollins College faculty, students, and staff, and for all students with identification.  For all others, the admission fee is $5.  The Cornell Museum is located on the Winter Park campus of Rollins College.  For additional information, please call 407-646-2526 or visit the website www.rollins.edu/cfam
