Yve-Alain Bois of Harvard to Speak at Cornell on “Picasso & Matisse”

WINTER PARK, FL — Dr. Yve-Alain Bois, chairman of the Department of History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University, will deliver a free public lecture entitled “Picasso & Matisse: A Gentle Rivalry,” on Sunday, February 6, at 3 p.m., at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College. Dr. Bois, a Thomas P. Johnson Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Rollins College, will present his lecture in conjunction with the Cornell’s exhibition of Picasso’s Vollard Suite, on view through March 5. Dr. Bois, a Joseph Pulitzer, Jr., Professor of Modern Art at Harvard, has written extensively on 20th century art — from Matisse and Picasso to post-war American art. A collection of his essays, Painting as Model, was published by M.I.T. press in 1990. Most recently, Dr. Bois curated exhibitions Matisse and Picasso: A Gentle Rivalry at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, and “Ellsworth Kelly: Early Drawings” at the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Picasso’s Vollard Suite is on view at the Cornell simultaneously with Breaking Boundaries: Exploration and Collaboration at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. On Thursday, February 3, hours will be extended from 5 to 8 p.m. For further details, call the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at 407-646-2526 or visit the Cornell’s Website at www.rollins.edu/cfam. The Cornell is located on the Winter Park campus of Rollins College. Except for some workshops, admission and all programs are offered free of charge to the public.
