Job Search

All the information you need to land your next job.

Job Search Methods

CCLP is a great starting point for your job search, providing a foundation of information and support. Job Search is a complex, exacting, and often lengthy process that may include the following steps:

  1. Research industries, companies/organizations, and opportunities of interest.
  2. Identify networking contacts in your areas of interest; start, maintain, and build your network!
  3. Use the intelligence gathered during your research (and through your network) to modify your resume and cover letter to meet industry expectations and job requirements. Network!
  4. Define your personal brand – and represent yourself consistently across application documents (resume, cover letter, writing samples, etc.) and social media (LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, etc.). Network!
  5. Identify job boards and other sources of job postings; schedule regular visits to sites that list good-fit opportunities within your industry of choice.
  6. Identify, track, and comply with application deadlines.
  7. Follow up with employers and recruiters in a timely fashion.
  8. Prepare to interview effectively – and practice your interviewing skills.
  9. Learn how to negotiate salary and benefits – and be sure to practice negotiating.
  10. Learn how to conclude your job search and make a great impression in your new role.

□    A system for tracking application documents.
□    A professional portfolio to hold application documents, interview notes and company handouts.
° Get yours free from Career & Life Planning!
□    Lists of companies and positions of interest which you have researched.
□    An appropriate e-mail address and professional-sounding voicemail message.
□    A well-tailored suit, good shoes and other professional interview attire.

Job Search Strategies

An effective job search incorporates multiple strategies including:
• Using social media.
• Networking.
• Targeting your resume.
• Using job databases.
• Contacting employment agencies.
• Tracking your applications.

Also, evaluate your progress regularly:
If something isn't working, step back and consider why.
• What have I been doing?
• Where am I spending the most time?
• What can I do differently?

Follow Up

Following up is the KEY to distinguishing yourself as a candidate! Follow up with each application (unless otherwise specified).

Why follow up?
• Because most candidates don't!
• Restate your interest in the position.
• Confirm your application has been received.
• Inquire about the expected hiring timeline.
• Ask if any additional information is needed.

Guidelines for follow up:
• Play by their rules. (If they say no phone calls or email, respect their choice.)
• Call or email within 3-5 business days after you submit your application.
• Be courteous to anyone whom responds to your inquiry.
• After initial contact, follow up every two weeks to check your status.
• If you don't receive a response, identify an internal contact through LinkedIn and ask them how they would recommend you proceed.

• The job search is a numbers game. Employers receive hundreds of applicants for anyone opening.
• If you are not getting a response, your time may be better spent applying for other opportunities.

Congratulations! You Received a Job Offer. Now What?

As tempting as it is to accept a job on the spot, DON’T!! Ask for some time (usually one week is enough) to fully weigh your options.
