Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation to Offer Karen Plunkett Memorial Scholarship

August 9, 2010—The Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation in Winter Park, Florida is offering the Karen Plunkett Memorial Scholarship for the Rollins College Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership Center’s Certificate in Leadership Practice program. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a public relations or communications professional in Orange, Osceola, Seminole or Lake County. Preference will be given to an individual who is involved in the community or who has connection with a nonprofit organization. Applications are due by August 20, 2010.

Karen Plunkett specialized in public relations and represented law and accounting firms in the Orlando area. Among her public relations friends, she was known for her gracious style combined with a backbone of steel. She became president of the Florida Public Relations Association and earned the group's Dillon Award for lifetime achievement. For 15 years, she also taught public relations courses at Rollins College and the University of Central Florida, where she earned her master's degree.

Jerry Hilbrich, chairman of the board at the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation, said, “The Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation would like Karen's legacy to live on and this scholarship will honor her life as a public relations professional and as a distinguished community volunteer, teacher and mentor." Margaret Linnane, executive director at the Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership Center adds, “We are so pleased to administer this scholarship honoring Karen, which will allow professionals in this field to enhance their leadership skills for years to come.”

The Certificate in Leadership Practice is designed for nonprofit professionals, including emerging leaders, who are ready to take their leadership skill set to the next level. Attendees develop a comprehensive understanding of their personal leadership style through self-assessment, learn about organization dynamics and the role leaders play at all levels, and learn how to be more effective leaders within their current or future leadership positions.
