Andrea Williamson (’07BA), was named a 2011 Fulbright Scholarship recipient and is the 10th Rollins student to receive a Fulbright award in recent years.  Williamson is an assistant director in the office of admission. She graduated from Rollins in 2007 with a major in art history and was class valedictorian. This May, Williamson will receive her master’s degree in business administration from Rollins’ Crummer Graduate School.

As part of her Fulbright Scholarship, beginning in January 2011, Williamson will be an English teaching assistant in Malaysia.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to learn about different cultures and to explore diverse forms of art. Malaysia represents the convergence of numerous cultures and traditions; I’m interested in studying how these cultures interact on a daily basis,” said Williamson. “I’m also looking forward to continuing a career involving education.”

“Andrea is a very talented student,” said Jay Shivamoggi, director of the office of external and competitive scholarships. “You see that evident in her job in the admission office, when she was organizing a multitude of activities as an undergraduate student, or while she balanced work and study as a Crummer graduate student. Andrea has an interest in Asian and Pacific art and her year in Malaysia will give her an opportunity to pursue her interest in art as well as interaction with high school students, which she enjoys very much.”

 In October 2009, the Fulbright Program announced that Rollins is currently recognized as the number one top producing master’s institution in the nation (based on Carnegie Classification).

Since Shivamoggi’s arrival on Rollins’ campus in 2005, 19 students and alumni have received prestigious competitive scholarships and fellowships.  Williamson’s award marks the 10th student who has received a Fulbright under Shivamoggi’s advising and guidance.

The Fulbright program was established in 1964 and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. It is the largest U.S. international exchange program offering opportunities for students, scholars and professionals to pursue international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.
