Historic Winter Park and Rollins: Partners in Learning
For the past three years Dr. Julian Chambliss, associate professor of history has been incorporating community-based research into many of his courses. "Historic Winter Park" is a class project in two of Chambliss' classes designed to focus on local history with the intention of increasing student understanding of what historians do while supporting cultural institutions in the area.
This project began in 2007 as a result of a successful service-learning grant awarded to Chambliss by the Office of Community Engagement to support an examination of historic spaces and places in Winter Park. According to Chambliss, "Working with community partners such as the Winter Park Historical Association, the Winter Park Fire & Rescue Department and the Winter Park Public Library, this project has become an ongoing tool to merge my scholarly interest into class assignments that push students to think about history in as a dynamic hands-on discipline."
