The Rollins College Debate Team was inaugurated in the fall of 2007 by Assistant Professor of Philosophy Eric D. Smaw, Ph.D., with the help and guidance of Tom Cook, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy, and Roger Casey, Ph.D. (former) Provost and Academic Vice President. Although the team had just begun, the 2007 - 08 season was not a year of trial and error. The team celebrated many notable achievements--their debating talent brought them 1st place at the Lone Star Invitational in Houston, TX; 3rd place at the Florida Intercollegiate Forensics Association in Tallahassee, FL, at which they also earned 3rd and 4th place speaker awards; and, 16th place at the Novice National Parliamentary Debate Competition in Pensacola, Fla. By the end of the 2007 - 08 debate season, the inaugural team had established a standard of excellence for subsequent debate teams to follow.
In addition to competing in tournaments and hosting teams, the debate team members participate in campus-wide forums on many social and political topics, such as same-sex marriage, College Honor Code, discrimination in America (Jena Six), women in politics, and health care. Moreover, the debate team participates in other service events around campus such as the Involvement Fair, the Summit on Transformative Learning, and the orientation seminars for first-year students.
