The Alfond Inn at Rollins: Creating a History for Tomorrow
Projected to open in spring 2013, The Alfond Inn at Rollins, which was initiated by the $12.5-million grant from the Harold Alfond Foundation, will feature 112 guest rooms, 8,000 square feet of ballroom and meeting space, a conservatory, restaurant, elevated pool deck, bar, fitness center, and a series of courtyards. Last June, the Rollins Club of Boston kicked off the College’s summer of service by participating in a service project at Franklin Park Zoo. The Office of Community Engagement (OCE) continued to provide summer service opportunities to the campus community, including the Rollins Club of Central Florida through SummerSERVE, a program designed to build connections in the Central Florida area and contribute to community initiatives through meaningful service work projects. Research Reveals Human Impact on Florida Reefs
This summer, Associate Professor of Biology Kathryn Sutherland led a research team in exploring the source of pathogens and how human bacteria infects wildlife. The study, which was conducted as a research-based diving expedition among Caribbean elkhorn coral off the Florida coast, included Hunter Noren ’12, a participant of the Student-Faculty Collaborative Scholarship program. Winter Park Institute: Ideas in Residence
In its fourth season, The Winter Park Institute features discussions between the Rollins community and thought leaders from diverse fields. Dr. Sylvia Earle, environmental advocate and oceanographer, will launch the current season September 14 with “Sustainable Seas: The Vision and the Reality.” Other fall events include feminist performance group Guerrilla Girls, leading women's advocate Gloria Steinem, former Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder, and Pulitzer Prize winner David McCullough. Rollins' summer reading program encourages first-year students to explore topics of leadership and citizenship, challenging their conceptions of the immediate world around them. Share this student experience with the Class of 2015 by reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, a riveting story of a collision between ethics, race and medicine by Rebecca Skloot.

On August 19 during Convocation 2011, the Rollins Alumni Association presented alumnus Clayton Ferrara with the Young Alumni Achievement Award – Central Florida for his commitment to community activism. This award serves as the Alumni Association’s official reintroduction to its alumni recognition program, which exists to celebrate and honor Rollins alumni for their accomplishments and service. National Weekend of Service and Remembrance
In observance of the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001, the Rollins community will come together this Saturday in tribute to the courageous 9/11 victims and survivors and individuals who rose in service in response to the attacks. The National Weekend of Service and Remembrance encourages community members to perform good deeds, support charitable causes, and engage in other acts of compassion in recognition of 9/11.
