Dr. Johnson is the Director of the Master of Public Health Program. He teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses related to public health. Dr. Johnson has published numerous articles in reputable journals and co-authored a number of chapters in extensively used public health textbooks. Dr. Johnson’s research interests include chronic disease epidemiology, infectious disease epidemiology, and health disparities.

Prior to his arrival at Rollins, Dr. Johnson worked for the Hawaii State Department of Health as a community health outreach worker for a statewide syringe exchange program. This position involved working in some of the most economically, socially and politically depressed areas of Honolulu directly providing services to injection drug users and commercial sex workers. In addition to his work in Hawaii, Dr. Johnson has worked on public health projects in Belize, Turkey and Ethiopia. Additionally, Dr. Johnson was a delegate at the 12th World Congress on Public Health where he voted to ratify the Istanbul Declaration, which declares health as a basic human right. This declaration has since been presented before the General Assembly at the United Nations both in New York and Geneva, Switzerland.

In addition to his public health pursuits, Dr. Johnson is a strong proponent of the value of a liberal education. He is well-read in classic literature, original religious texts, history, western philosophy, and Greek mythology. His travels abroad are fairly extensive and include fourteen countries.
