Africana Studies, Afro-American Studies, Black Studies, Pan-African Studies and African-American Studies are all descriptors for academic and intellectual endeavors that developed in response to the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The Africa and African-American Studies (AAAS) Program at Rollins began in 1986 when members of the anthropology and modern language departments came together to investigate the possibility of creating an academic minor to explore the impact of African and African-American culture on the western experience.
