hen, after
an exhausting climb of the Acropolis Hill, or after wandering
through hundreds of small shops, or carrying your
heavy loot from the flea market, you decide to have a
glass of cold beer or water, the Plaka will provide
many charming restaurants, bars, and cafes where you
can sit and hide from the sun. I particularly liked
those which shaded the visitors with a canopy of green
branches (ill. 1-3) or surprised me as examples of
nature's coexistence with the stone of the city, like
the splendid bougainvillea bush reaching towards the
sun (ill. 9). Walking along the narrow streets of the
Plaka, you may discover interesting views of the
Acropolis (ill. 4) or Lykavittos Hill (ill. 5);
sometimes you may even find, unexpectedly, a
well-hidden night club (mpuat), like
the Hesperides (ill. 8), where you can listen all
night to traditional Greek rembetika music or to
interesting new bands.
