The Old Church of St. Athanasios in Theseio The New Church of St. Athanasios--Fresco The New Church of St. Athanasios--Exterior view

There are many churches in Athens that deserve a visit, and some of them are featured on the pages of this presentation.  Here, I present a few photographs of churches rarely visited by tourists.  The first, a modern church of St. Dionysios the Aeropagite in Kolonaki, on Skoufa Street, attracted my attention because of its beautiful exterior mosaics.  The entrance is protected by a semicircular "firmament" with a bust of Christ, while the side niches depict the Archangels Gabriel and Michael (ill. 1, 3).  The dome shows a traditional image of Christ Pantokrator, surrounded by cherubim and seraphim. The second church, located about a hundred yards from the Theseio metro station, is a tiny church of St. Athanasios of Kourkouris.  Perched atop a rock, it overlooks the metro line (ill. 4).  Not far from the old church, even closer to the metro station, stands the modern church of St. Athanasios (ill. 6), with a fresco of the saint above its entrance (ill. 5).
